1 Corinthians 7:1-9
Well, if you have your Bibles, please turn to 1st Corinthians chapter 7. We're in a series on 1st Corinthians entitled, ''And You Think You've Got Problems.'' And we've been talking about all the problems that were in the church in Corinth. And they had problems with division. And they had problems with pride. And they had problems with spiritual gifts. And they had problems with people getting drunk at the Lord's Supper. And, as I've told you before their biggest problem was that they were saved out of a very pagan, heathenish society there in Corinth. And they were brought into the church, and they had trouble jettisoning all the junk from their old life. And so they brought old sins into the church, and they were struggling through all these things because they had trouble cutting off their old life and really pursuing the Lord with a pure heart.
Well, as you can imagine, when a church has problems it's pretty common to find problems regarding love and marriage. And they had all sorts of problems with that subject, with love and marriage, and all sorts of problems with bad marriages, with divorce that had come into the church, and divorce that was so rampant. There are records of people that lived at that time period that would have twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven marriages and divorces. I mean, it was just all over the place. And then you had adultery that was rampant. You had a guy who had married this woman, and she would clean house for him and take care of the kids and this and that. And then he'd have girlfriends on the side. And you know he'd visit them and do things with them. And that was just considered kind of commonplace. And it was just a bad deal, bad, bad marriages. And so there was kickback in the church, and some people said in Corinth, ''Well, if you really want to be super spiritual, what you need to do is y ...
