We’re going to talk about trouble tonight, the trouble in the Corinthian church. And I’ve entitled this whole series on the Book of 1st Corinthians, And You Think You’ve Got Problems! Because as you study the church in Corinth, you find out that there were just problems galore in the church. They had problems with spiritual gifts. They had problems with this thing called speaking in tongues.
Now in Corinth one of the big, big problems, and one way to understand the book better, Paul preached the gospel in Corinth and he led these people to Christ. Now, obviously, not all of them were believers in the whole city, but in the church, I mean, there were genuine believers. Because you read in the Book of 1st Corinthians and you just think, Man, these people, they have problems with divisions. They have problems with factions. They have a problem with hero cult worship. “I am of Paul, and I am of Apollos, and I am of Cephas,” and all this kind of stuff. They had problems with human philosophies that they were bringing into the church. They had the problems with gross sexual immorality where a man was sleeping with his stepmother and had her as his girlfriend and lawsuits in the church, Christians suing other Christians, problems in the home, problems with marriage and divorce and family. And, you just name it, they had it. And when they’d have the Lord’s Supper, people would get drunk. Other people would come to the Love Feast. It was a meal. And there would be no food there because they’d all eat it up before some of the people that they I guess, didn’t like very much, could get there. And it was serious stuff. And they had a real problem with spiritual gifts. It’s the church of problems. And some people say, “Well, what’s up with this church?
