1 Corinthians 15:1-8
If you have your Bible, please turn to 1st Corinthians chapter 15. I’ve entitled my message tonight The Real Gospel: Accept no Substitutes!
Now how many in here would say that you grew up in a home where you had to watch your expenses pretty close in your parents’ home? How many would say, “You know, my dad was kind of tight with a buck.” Anybody have a dad like that? I had a dad like that. When you have parents who are really tight maybe they’re just tight, or maybe there’s just not much money. We lived in a home with six kids and mom and dad. My mom didn’t work outside the home, and so we had to watch expenses. And my dad when we would buy groceries, he would always buy off-brand stuff. Did you ever experience that, off-brand buying by your parents? Trix cereal was a cereal we really liked as kids, and my dad would buy Kix cereal. It was like, “Well, it’s close enough.” It’s like, “It doesn’t taste anything like Trix,” you know. He’d buy the off-brand Corn Flakes that sat in the cupboard for months, because nobody wanted to eat them. He goes, “That’s good, because when I want a bowl of cereal, it’s there.” And if he bought good stuff, it was gone. In our family, if you ever got like, Coco-Puffs or something like that, when my mom brought it home from the store, it was gone in like an hour, the whole box, because we never got that kind of stuff. We didn’t get Coke or things like that. And when my dad would buy ice cream, he bought Mellorine. Do you remember that? You guys remember that? It’s pus-flavored vegetable fat. It’s just the nastiest, grossest stuff. And it presented itself as an ice cream alternative. But it wasn’t ice cream. It was made from animal fat and vegetable fat. And if you ever saw how they made it, you would never eat it again. I went online to find out about Mellorine.
