Now, how many in this room have ever been questioned by an attorney, anyone? You may not want to say. Questioned by an attorney? How many of you ever served on a jury? All right. Anytime you go for jury duty you get questioned by the attorneys, and you're always thinking, I hope I get the question wrong so I can go home. Not really but sometimes. We had a great, great deacons' retreat last weekend. And Philip Cockrell, who's our deacon chairman, is an attorney. And he reminded me of some true instances - these are recorded - of questions that attorneys, who are smart guys, who have studied and are well read and good at speaking - actually asked in a courtroom. And sometimes attorneys, they can be so thorough that they become idiotic. Here are some true situations:

The attorney asks, ''Do you recall approximately the time that you examined that body of Mr. Huffington at St. Mary's Hospital?''

Doctor: ''It was in the evening. The autopsy started about 5:30 p.m. ''And Mr. Huffington was dead at the time, is that correct?'' He said, 'No, he was sitting on the table wondering, Why am I performing an autopsy on him?

Another situation: ''What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning?'' ''He said, 'Where am I, Kathy?''' ''And why did that upset you?'' ''Because my name is Susan!''

Here was this question: ''Any suggestions as to what prevented this from being a murder trial instead of an attempted murder trial?'' Answer: ''The victim lived!''

Here's the last one: ''Doctor, before you perform the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?'' ''No.'' ''Did you check for blood pressure?'' ''No.'' ''Did you check for breathing?'' ''No.'' ''So then it's possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?'' ''No.'' ''How can you be so sure, doctor?'' ''Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar! ...
