Blessed Are Those That Mourn (3 of 32)
Series: Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5:4
There are things in life we try to avoid. There are probably people we try to avoid. We avoid things we don’t like and circumstances that are uncomfortable. There is not a person here who likes pain and suffering. We go to great lengths to avoid these things. We want to run and hide in a happy place and insult ourselves from difficulties and sufferings of this life. We want to run to a place where there is no pain - hurt - frustration - defeat - sadness. We want to run to a place of blessing and rest. To be honest in a way there is nothing wrong with that --- only a fool wants to run to those things.
Thoughts like that are not just common to our day but are even evidenced in the lives of some of the heroes of our faith found on the pages of Scriptures.
In Psalm 55 we find David in one of those uncomfortable and painful moments in life and as he rehearses the depths of his pain listen to his cry and his prayer. He cries out, ‘‘Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. 7 ‘‘Behold, I would wander far away,
I would lodge in the wilderness. 8 ‘‘I would hasten to my place of refuge from the stormy wind and tempest.’’
1. That’s the cry of a man who wants to escape the pain and sorrow of life.
2. He is expressing a longing that we have all felt.
a. He wants to get away, to run away from the difficulties around him and the sorrow that he feels. He wants to run away and escape to a place of blessing - a place of rest - a place of happiness - a place of calm - a place of peace - a place of comfort.
As we continue our study in the beatitudes, the attitudes that are to be in our lives, Jesus tells us about a place of comfort, blessing, peace and happiness. The only problem is that to experience it and find it you have to go through a place mourning, brokenness and pain.
