Matthew 5:5
One of the most famous lines in recent movie history is from the movie Titanic. If you have never seen the movie chances are you have seen the clip where Leonardo Dicaprio’s character is standing on the top deck railing of the Titanic shouting, ‘I am king of the world.’
I would imagine that everyone at some point in their lives have wondered what it would be like to be king of the world, to have it all. For some people throughout world history it was more than just a passing fancy or day dream. It was an obsession and a quest. For a select few it was almost a reality.
To date no one person or government has ever completely conquered the world or owned it all. What if someone were able to tell you a sure fire way that you could have it all, that you could conquer the world? Would you do it? Would you listen?
Today, as we continue our study of the beatitudes, the attitudes that are to be in our lives, Jesus is going to tell us how we can have it all. He is going to tell us what it takes to inherit and possess the earth. That is the promise and reward of the third beatitude.
Based off our study of the beatitudes so far you should already know by know that Jesus’ method for inheriting the earth is not going to be according to conventional human wisdom. You should know by now that it is not going to be achieved by traveling a road that is well known, well traveled, popular and easy. You should also know that the full reward of this beatitude will be delayed but well worth it.
What does it take to inherit the earth? What does it take to possess and inherit the glory and riches of this world? According to Jesus it takes meekness and gentleness. Just hearing that probably made your head spin but that is exactly what Jesus says.
Listen: Matthew 5.5 - Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
I don’t mean any disrespect or to sound sacrilegious ...
