Lighting the Darkness (11 of 32)
Series: Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5:14-16
The philosopher, Plato, once said, ‘we can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark: the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light…afraid of the truth.’ There is a great tragedy in that. There is an even greater tragedy when those of us who are called by the God of this universe to be light refuse to light up the darkness. It is a tragedy when those who know the truth are afraid to live according to the truth and make it known.
Jesus has called us to be light in this world. Implicit in that statement, almost hidden, is this simple and undeniable fact; we live in a world of spiritual darkness. We live in a world where people are lost in spiritual darkness and completely unaware of the dangerous paths they are walking, paths of fear, emptiness, loneliness, hate, unbridled sensuality, greed and sin. All of these paths ultimately lead them to destruction. It is a world whose eyes have been covered in darkness by the evil one who wants to shut out the light of God.
It is into this darkness that Jesus has sent me and you as His children and followers with the singular purpose of bringing light into the darkness. Jesus says…14 ‘‘You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven - Matthew 5.14-16.
What an incredible statement!
1. Light is a symbol of hope, especially to those who have lost their way and are wandering aimlessly and helplessly in the dark.
2. Light is a symbol of life. There is nothing that can live without some source of light and heat.
