Strong views and opinions about anything and everything abound in our world today and the church is no different. NT scholar F.F. Bruce once said there are two kinds of Christians: those who go to church to hear the Gospel preached, and those who go to church simply to see whether the Gospel is preached!

I am not advocating a policy that ways we are to be so open minded our minds fall out on the floor. I am not saying we listen without discernment. Some people come and listen intently but the only reason they listen is to see if what is said agrees with their understanding and interpretation.

As Jesus preached on that hillside what we call the Sermon on the Mount that would have been the mindset of many of the Jews in Jesus’ day, especially the Jewish religious leaders, the Sadducees and Pharisees.

Just think for a minute about all the questions, objections and criticisms that Jesus dealt with throughout His ministry you can begin to imagine the thoughts and questions that were running through the minds of many on that hillside.

1. Who does this Jesus think He is? He is uneducated and untrained. There are no letters before his name or after (Dr.; Rev; PhD; MDiv). He had no title it was just Jesus, son of a carpenter.
2. His teaching was different. It is not like that of the Scribes and Pharisees. He teaches as with a different authority. All the other teachers quote this Rabbi or this Rabbi or that Rabbi Jesus speaks on His own. Where does His authority come from?
3. What about the law? What about Moses? What about the Scriptures? Is He teaching against the law? Is He trying to replace the law and the prophets with a new teaching? Was there any connection between what Jesus was teaching and the OT? (There are some believers who ask similar questions today. They want to know the relationship between the NT and the OT and what place it holds in our lives)
