A few weeks ago I confessed to my inadequacies and ineptitude when it comes to all things mechanical. My philosophy is if something is broken that’s why they sell new ones. I am not much of an outdoorsman either. I don’t hunt. I don’t live to go out and shoot something furry that is bouncing around the woods, whether it has antlers on it or not. I am not opposed to eating what you shoot and cook but it’s just not for me. There’s just something about hiking through the cold dark woods so I can go climb a tree and sit there waiting for Bambi to walk out and blow him into oblivion that doesn’t register with me! One thing, I don’t like heights. It’s not just the fact I am afraid of heights…truth is I am not real fond of the dark.

I know some of you are already calling for my man card. It is not so much the dark that frightens me. It is what’s out there in the dark that I can’t see that frightens me. It is not the lions, tigers and bears that frighten me, not really. It is the hidden things that I can’t see that bother me, the things that don’t have feet but have fangs. What frightens me are those slithery serpents that are hidden, almost invisible, in bushes, piles of leaves, on the backside of fallen logs and large rocks waiting to bite me and shut down my central nervous system that worries me. What bothers me is the things that can destroy me before I have a chance to destroy them are the things that bother me.

There are things in life we can’t see but exist and are dangerous. By the time some of them show themselves or we acknowledge their presence it is too late and they do great damage and harm. There is a parallel in our spiritual life as well. There are things hidden that can cause us great damage and harm.
