I was talking with someone the other day about United, our leadership and stewardship campaign. We talked about the number of people who made a faith promise over the next three years and how much was promised and how they hoped the campaign would be a success. Then they made an interesting comment. This person is already a generous person said they were looking forward to the day they would be debt free and that they are planning to achieve that goal in the not so distant future. I am excited about it because then I can give to the Lord in the way I really want.

That conversation reminded me that debt, owing something to someone, imposes limitations on us. It affects how we live. It affects how we give. I would imagine there is great joy in being debt free - debt free living.

In the Lord’s Prayer Jesus reminds us that as Kingdom people we should live debt free. The debt Jesus speaks of in this prayer is not a financial debt but a sin debt.

1. It is a debt we all owe.
2. It is a debt we are all acquainted with.
3. It is a debt that we need forgiven and cancelled daily.

Jesus tells us that when you prayer, expectation that we are going to pray, to pray, ‘‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread. 12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’]’’

One of the painful truths we learn in the Bible is that we are sinners and owe a debt to God because of our sin.
