Every so often you hear these odd stories that display a depth of stupidity that blows your mind. You sit back and think, ‘are you serious? Did they really just do that? Did they just say that?’ I ran across some of those stories the other day…
1. Eduardo Rivera, 43, was in court awaiting a hearing on the charge of receiving stolen property when he was rearrested for carving his name into the courtroom bench (Reading, Pennsylvania, February 2003).
2. David Joe White, 32, having just pleaded guilty to 42 burglary charges, was rearrested after swiping his lawyer’s recorder from the defense table (Attalla, Alabama, February 2003)
3. Chan Kwok-keung, 34, was sentenced to four months for stealing a court interpreter’s purse; he was in the courtroom at the time on theft charges (but has just been cleared).
These men and their ridiculous stories bring validity to the statement made by playwright and poet Oscar Wilde. ‘‘I can resist anything but temptation.’’ Some of us can sympathize.
Today we finish up our study on the Lord’s teaching prayer.
1. We are going to look at what may be one of the more difficult petitions for us to apply.
2. While it may be difficult to apply it is one we desperately need to pray and put into practice.
It is a petition for victory over temptation and sin. It is a prayer for victory over the spiritual battles we find ourselves constantly engaged in.
1. Those of us who have been forgiven and freed from sin’s tyranny in the past desperately wants to avoid it in the future.
2. We have come to realize how damaging sin is to our lives and especially our relationship with God.
3. Sin, unconfessed or dealt with, robs us of the joy of salvation and the sweetness of an unhindered fellowship with God.
4. It also keeps the Spirit from using us fully and completely.
