Matthew 6:19-24
A very rich and greedy man was dying. Days before he was to die he called his lawyer, doctor and minister to his bedside and said, ‘‘They say you can’t take it with you but I’m going to try and take some of it. I have three envelopes with a half-million dollars cash in each one. I want each one of you to take an envelope and as they lower my casket in the grave I want you to throw in the envelopes filled with cash!’’ Several days passed and the old man died and was buried. As requested, at the graveside, each man threw in his envelope. As they walked away the lawyer looked at the other two and said, ‘‘I have a confession to make. You both know I am expanding my practice and I kept $100,000 for myself. I only threw in $400,000.’’ The doctor looked at him and said, ‘‘Don’t feel bad. I am opening a new clinic to help the poor. I only threw in a quarter million and kept the other half for myself.’’ After hearing those confessions the pastor looked at them and said, ‘‘I cannot believe that neither of you placed the whole amount in the casket as you were asked.’’ They looked at the preacher and said, ‘‘Now with that new worship center going up downtown don’t tell us you didn’t keep some of the money to help out.’’ The pastor looked at them and said, ‘‘Nope, never crossed my mind. I had the church treasurer write him a check for the full amount.’’
This old fella didn’t get to take with him what he wanted. We all know he didn’t take any of it with him. Today, I want you to know it is possible, while it may not be cash, stocks or bonds, to take something with you.
1. I also want you to know that you do in this life with your life will determine how much you enjoy the life to come.
