HOW BIG IS YOUR GOD?
Exodus 20:3-6
Dr. Jerry Vines
Several years ago I read a book by a man named J. B. Phillips,
who has a translation of the New Testament, entitled Your God is Too
Small. It was a very interesting and true book because he basically
said that a lot of people have a concept of God that is too small. The
reason the Ten Commandments begin with our relationship to God is
because you have to be sure that your relationship is right with God
before you can expect your relationship with others to be what it ought
to be. The first four commandments are godward. They have to do with
man's relationship to God. The first two commandments really kind of
hang together. Commandment number one tells us who God is. Commandment
number two tells us how we are to worship God. The first commandment
tells us that we are to worship the right God; then the second one says
that we are not to worship the right God in the wrong way. The instinct
to worship is a universal instinct in man. Anywhere you want to go, any
tribe or race of people you will find that these people are engaged in
worship of some kind. There is no place anywhere on the earth where you
will not find people worshiping God. It is a god-given instinct. There
is a god-consciousness in the heart of every human being. Atheism is an
unnatural thing in the heart of man. God has placed that god
consciousness in man so it is unnatural for a man to be atheist.
Atheism is as unnatural to the human heart as singing is to a Georgia
2
mule. It is absolutely out of place.
So, when a person becomes an atheist they really commit moral
suicide. They violate their own inner awareness of God and in so doing
they cut themselves off from the source of morality. So, this
commandment has to do with this matter of how we are to worship God.
How big a God do we worship? I'm going to try to squeeze everything I
can out of this commandment. I believe it is very important that we
understand how to w ...
