INTRODUCTION: A father was teaching his son to play baseball. He said, ''Pray as if everything depended upon God. Then play as if everything depended upon you.''
I like that philosophy. And I want to apply it to our lesson on righteousness today. I am in a sermon series based on Paul's letter to the Philippian Church. The series is entitled ''Surprised by Joy'' and we're reviewing the provisions that God has made to keep us joyful even if our economy or personal circumstances are challenging and painful. Previously, we talked about one aspect of righteousness, which was POSITIONAL righteousness. The other side of POSITIONAL righteousness is CONDITIONAL righteousness and it is just as important to our spiritual health. This morning I want us to see three aspects of conditional righteousness from Philippians 3:12-14.
I. THE GOAL OF RIGHTEOUSNESS IS TO MATCH CONDITION TO POSITION
Phil.3:12 ''Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.''
What does Paul mean when he says ''I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me''? For what did Christ Jesus take hold of Paul? The answer is righteousness. Let's review. In the previous sermon on righteousness we looked at the previous verses wherein Paul writes in Philippians 3:9 ''that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ-the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.'' We went on to talk about the concept of POSITIONAL righteousness. When a person enters into Christ by baptism he enters the position of salvation. When we are in Christ, God imputes to us the perfect righteousness of Christ, meaning that we get credit for his righteousness. It is the righteousness of ...
