INTRODUCTION: Quote by Thomas Edison: ''5% of the people think. 10% of the people think they think. And 85% of the people would rather die than think.'' Think about it!
I do want us to think today, in fact, I want us to think about thinking.
Your brain is the most complex mechanism in the world and the most influential organ in your body. The average brain, weighing about three pounds, has 120 trillion cell connections. That's more connections than DOLLARS in the national debt! One scientist called it ''the most complex arrangement of matter in the universe.''
In addition, your brain, your mind, is one of the provisions of God for your joy. I'm in a sermon series based upon Paul's letter to the Philippians. I've entitled that series ''Surprised by Joy'' because this letter helps us to understand that we can have joy in the midst of challenging or painful outer circumstances. God has made provisions for our spirit and one of those provisions is a positive mind-set, a positive frame of mind, and a positive mental attitude.
So today, we're going to study one single verse of the Bible, Philippians 4:8, to find out how we can use God's gift of our BRAIN to strengthen our spirits, and we're going to do it by asking and answering three questions.
Philippians 4:8 ''Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.''
I. WHY SHOULD WE THINK ABOUT SUCH THINGS
This verse doesn't answer the question of WHY we should think about such things but some of Paul's other writings certainly do. We are to think about such things because of one basic principles that God has built into us and that principle is WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK ABOUT.
