After I read this story I was not sure whether to laugh or cry about what passes for science and higher education today.

1. The English Department at the University of Wyoming offers a class to teach its students how to communicate with aliens. The course is called ''Interstellar Message Composition'' and is sponsored by NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
2. According to the Wyoming website, it is ''the first class to enlist creative writers in a potential cosmic conversation.'' ''We've thought a lot about how we might communicate with other worlds but we haven't thought much about what we'd actually say.''
3. One of the first assignments the instructor gives his students is to summarize the human condition in 10 words or less - a short simple statement they could send as an S.O.S. to the universe. One English major completed the assignment in just 9 words: ''We are an adolescent species searching for our identity.'' (Hughes pp. 171)
4. Sadly, for all man's efforts, learning, observation and advancements they are no closer to understanding their true purpose for life and because of that are no closer to discovering who they really are and were created to be.
5. For all our star gazing we have somehow failed to look beyond the stars to the one who made them. Only when we are willing to look there do we truly discover what life is about and how to live it.

This quest to discover what life is about and how to live it is the journey we have been following Solomon on throughout Ecclesiastes.

1. While we begin to see glimpses of where Solomon is taking us he is still trying to find meaning all the while bouncing between faith and life under the sun (life without God).
2. He probably understood the sentiments in the statement ''we are an adolescent species searching for our identity.''
