Matthew 5:31-32
The Christian community has not been immune to the disintegration of the home and the dismantling of marriages due to divorce. With the divorce rate rising and at times as high within the church as it is without (That is a shame. Of all the people in the world we should know sometimes of forgiveness and grace). Because the number of divorces and second marriages are seemingly on the rise both outside and inside the church creates a very sensitive and at times complicated issue for the church and its leaders.
There is a tension the church feels between its responsibility to bear God's standards and its pastoral responsibility and desire to show compassion and grace to those, who for whatever reason, were unable to maintain those standards.
As a pastor who loves people, this is not a sermon that you are anxious to preach or necessarily delight in teaching because of the hurt and pain you know divorce has brought to families. Then to come and preach on something that is already a source of pain and regret is not lost on us.
We also have a call and duty to teach the full counsel of God, when it is easy and when it is not. We are still called upon to teach and uphold the biblical standards for marriage that God has set and teach faithfully concerning not just marriage but divorce.
1. One man, after his pastor preached on the issue of divorce, commented to his pastor concerning the quiet and somber mood during the service said, 'Pastor, it was a good message but it's hard to say sick `em when the dog has them by the leg.'
A message like this is not intended to be a polemic toward people who have endured a divorce, whether the divorce was on biblical grounds or not. Its purpose is to be faithful to God's Word, His design for marriage, the home and society. It is to instill in God's people a biblical understanding of marriage, divorce and remarriage.
