Husband's Role in Marriage (5 of 7)
Series: Marriage
Robert Dawson
Ephesians 5:1
I want to begin my message today the way I began last week's message. I want to sketch out the various relationships that exist within every marriage.
1. You have the husband's relationship to God.
2. You have the wife's relationship to God.
3. You have the husband's relationship with the wife.
4. All of them interconnected and affect one another.
5. (Triangle principle)
a. In the marriage relationship you are always moving closer to God and one another or away from God and one another.
Since God is the author of life and of marriage He has determined how each relationship is to work. One writer likened marriage to a dance.
1. In a dance one person leads and the other follows.
2. Both husband and wife cannot lead at the same time because if they do you get a very messy and ugly performance.
3. You wind up with a stalemate and a stale marriage where there is a continual power struggle between husband and wife over who is supposed to lead.
4. In the marital dance, however, the husband leads as he listens to the music of Christ. Because the wife hears the same music, they are able to keep time in their own minds and move as one.
In the dance of marriage God has established a pattern, He has composed the music and choreographed the dance. When we listen to His music and follow His design it is an absolute masterpiece to behold.
Oneness in marriage can only be achieved when both husband and wife understand their parts and fulfill them.
1. God has not only made men and women different but has given them both different but complementary roles in marriage, roles that do not compete but complete.
2. Two people, two roles coming together to form one beautiful picture of God's glory.
3. While both husband and wife individually reflect God's image and glory it is when they come together they that more beautifully and accurately reflect God's image.
