We can learn several things from this study.
1. MAN'S DEPRIVATION
4:1-2 These verses reveal the threefold context in which babies are to be born into the world.
1. The sexual content
Adam had relations with his wife. ''Knew.'' The Hebrews considered the sexual relationship to be a very intimate and meaningful form of knowledge. It was a form of knowledge not to be shared with anyone else. When it is, it is called adultery which is a devastating betrayal most marriages cannot survive. If they do, something precious has been lost.
Our culture frowns on smoking and smiles on drinking. It promotes homosexuality and frowns on adultery. It promotes gambling as an economic cure all.
Adam's flesh was created from the dust of the earth. Eve's flesh was created from Adam's flesh. Cain's flesh was created from Adam and Eve.
We may not understand all the mysteries of birth but we do know that babies are born in the context of sexual relationships. This is about as far a sex education goes for most people.
2. The social context
If the sexual content of birth is flesh, the social context of birth is family.
Genesis 2:24 ''Bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh... For this reason....'' ''This one and only this one, first, last, and always.''
God's intention was that future generations would be born in a social context of family life.
