Acts 1:1-11
It was early one Sunday morning as a somewhat frustrated dad was helping his little boy get ready for Sunday School and church. As they were getting ready the little boy looked up at his daddy and asked, ''Daddy, did you go to Sunday School every Sunday when you were little too?'' The dad looked down at his son with a smile on his face and said, ''Yes son I did. Every Sunday.'' After a few moments of contemplative silence the little boy looked up at his dad and said, ''Well, I guess it won't do me any good either.''
Apparently that father did not have a very powerful and convincing testimony. The same can be said about many of us. Unfortunately it could also be said of many of our churches today; churches whose testimony, effectiveness and impact in their communities are far from overwhelming and convincing.
It is my desire, has always been my desire, to see FBCLP have a strong presence for the Gospel. It is my desire that people in South Lowndes and North Florida see in us the transforming, redeeming, liberating and life-altering power of Jesus Christ and that we would lift Jesus high and that people would be drawn to Him.
This morning we are going to begin what will be a lengthy, but I believe profitable, series of messages looking at a group of believers who did just that, who impacted not just their community but the world. A group of believers who turned society on its end with and for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are going to follow the life and expansion of the early church in the book of Acts and observe a people who lived their lives so well that they earned for themselves the title of Christian, imitators of Christ.
As we start this journey today with the opening verses of this wonderful book I want us to be reminded of some very basic but essential truths that are necessary if we are to have an effective ministry.
