Giving What We Have (6 of 34)
Series: Acts
Robert Dawson
Acts 3
I want to remind you of a quote from John Wesley I shared a couple of weeks ago. John Wesley said, ''Get on fire for God and people will come to see you burn.''
1. When something is on fire it is not hard to tell. It gives off light. It gives off heat.
2. It also ignites other combustible/flammable material around it. Fire spreads and consumes what it comes into contact with. A fire that does not spread, or cannot spread, no matter how large, will not survive. It will eventually go out.
The same is true of a movement. It is true in some ways of our faith and of a church or ministry.
If you know what was happening in the first 2 chapters of Acts then you know for weeks a fire was kindling in that upper room as a small group of disciples met to pray and search the Scriptures while preparing themselves for the coming of the promised Spirit of God.
1. When the Spirit fell on these disciples their lives burst into a holy flame.
a. It gave light so others could see the Gospel.
b. It gave off heat melting the hardest and coldest hearts.
2. It was a fire that could not be contained and was not meant to be contained. It spilled out from that small room into the streets, into the city and as we will see in coming weeks into the world.
The same should be true of us as individuals and a faith family. What happens in this place on Sunday is about fanning of flames, flames that were birthed two thousand years ago, flames that have spread through the ages and around the world until they brought life to our spiritually dead hearts and made us alive and placed a fire in our souls.
1. As believers we come to this place and hear the Word taught. One of the best places to hear it taught is in small groups. We need to hear God's Word taught but we also need to hear how it impacts the lives of others.
2. On Sundays during this time I could do a lot of things. I could rail against the s ...
