The Truth about Thanksgiving
Rex Yancey
Psalm 100
What do you think of when you think of Thanksgiving? Some think of food...Turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes. That will make you gobble till you wobble or slurp till you burp.
For others Thanksgiving means Football. Men become zombies, glued to the tube as though it is a life support system.
For others Thanksgiving is a four day vacation. A time to rest, unwind, and relax.
Some think of Thanksgiving as the day to prepare for the busiest shopping day of the year. Time to hit those sales and get those Christmas presents bought.
For some Thanksgiving is family. It is a time when everybody gets together. Ellon and I spent our lives up and down highway 45.
For some Thanksgiving is history. They think of the founding of this country, pilgrims, Indians, and Plymouth Rock.
For some Thanksgiving is a religious day. After all, God does deserve his due. Atheists are doing their best to stamp out any mention of God or Jesus from our culture. So far they haven't touched Thanksgiving. It must be really hard on them to be thankful for something and not have anyone to thank.
Thanksgiving is a time to thank God for his provisions, providence and peace.
True Thanksgiving is more than any of this. In Psalm 100 David gives us four truths about real Thanksgiving.
1. TRUE THANKSGIVING IS PUBLIC...v 1-2
1. We are to publicly shout to the Lord.
Noise means volume; we are to vocally proclaim our joyful thanks.
In English...thanks means to express gratitude or appreciation, however, in Hebrew there is no such word with this meaning. The Hebrew word YADAH means to make a public acknowledgement.
In the Hebrew mindset it was never enough to thank God quietly or privately. In the mindset of Psalm 100 it must be public. True thankfulness cannot be kept quiet.
