It is estimated that up to 40% of the sales on the art market are comprised of forgeries. The sale of these very good recreations, along with their false documentation, can greatly undermine the value of the original works. Several years ago, to help educate art dealers on how prevalent these fake paintings are and how easily even the most astute art dealer can be fooled, Scotland Yard conducted a private exhibition of forged painting for art dealers.
The forgeries were remarkable. Fiona Ford, an art expert from the Association of Arts and Antique Dealers, said the level of skill displayed by the forgers was "terrifying." She added, "If every dealer saw this exhibit, it would further impress on them how careful they must be." [Associated Press, "Police Display Fakes at Exhibition to Warn Art Dealers," Nov. 2006]
In Peter's second letter, he sets up a Scotland Yard type of showcase to inform the church of the presence of fakes and forgeries in her midst. He wants to impress upon them the importance of and the need for discernment because false teachers were twisting the truth, deceiving people, and leading them astray.
This world is full of scam artist looking to take advantage of the uniformed, ignorant, and unsuspecting.

- Many of us receive text messages and phone calls claiming to be from a credit card company, bank, phone company, some other business or charity asking you to click a link, call a number so that they can obtain additional information on you.
