Grieved by the Darkness (27 of 34)
Series: Acts

Acts 17:16-34.
Over the course of my 20 plus years of ministry I have never had to endure the heartbreak and horror of a forced termination. I have been close a couple of times but have never felt the sting and the stigma of being fired.
I have two very dear friends in the ministry who are wonderful pastors and Godly men that have endured a forced termination at different stages of their ministry. It was devastating to them and their families and difficult to watch as a friend.
After their termination both men struggled. They were not anxious to get back in the ministry saddle. In fact, they were a little hesitant. It took time before they felt ready and willing to step back into a full-time pastoral position. I can certainly understand. There needs to be time to process, heal and regain focus.
Paul’s friends and ministry partners felt the same way. They felt that Paul needed to get away. Take a little time, regroup and in Paul’s case just be safe. Paul had been forced to leave the ministry field at his last three stops. The church had not fired him but circumstances dictated that he had to leave.

- He was jailed and beaten in Philippi.
- He was forced out of Thessalonica. They accused him of turning the world upside down when in reality he was turning the world right-side up.
- He was then forced to leave what started out to be a very promising ministry in Berea.
- Naturally, those in the church and Paul’s inner circle thought a little rest, relaxation and anonymity would do Paul a world of good.
- Everyone needs a sabbatical now and then. Timothy and Silas stayed in Berea while others escorted Paul toward the sea. They brought him to Athens and they left him there and went back for Silas and Timothy.
