- *Popular culture shapes our theology in many ways. It’s really amazing and sometimes sad to see how the beliefs of others influence our faith even more than the Word of God. According to a Barna Research report, almost all Americans believe they are good enough to get to heaven. That doesn't mean they think they are perfect, but that they think they are as good as, or better than, others. Even those who don't go to church see themselves as decent enough to have a good chance of "making it." I often ask people this question: "If you were to die today and God were to say to you, 'Why should I let you into heaven?' what would you reply?" Nine out of ten say something like this: "I'm a pretty good person, and I'm trying hard to do better."[1] And that’s what most people believe. In fact, many people who sit in the seats at church every Sunday believe that somehow, you can be good enough to go to Heaven. We think it’s good vs. bad. And if we’ve done enough good, we’ll make it in. But the really bad people in the world, like Hitler, Stalin, Bin Laden, Sadaam Hussein, those are the people who end up in Hell. There’s only one problem with that. Who defines what “good” is and who defines what “bad” is? Here’s how we define it: good is about as moral as we are.
