Luke 1INTRODUCTION: Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away", following the main story of Anakin Skywalker and his son Luke. The first film in the series, Star Wars, was released on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox and became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. I was 18-years-old when it was released in theaters and like many of you the themes and characters were imprinted on my psyche. How many of you saw that first movie in the theaters? How many of you saw the film in some format whether theater, VCR, DVD or other?
The movie introduced us to the cosmic energy field known as "the force." I'm going to show you about a 15-second clip in which Obi-Wan Kenobi explains the force to Luke Skywalker (roll clip). As Obi-Wan Kenobi explains, the Force is "an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together." Jedi and others access the Force and use it to help them and empower them.
The Force and the philosophies of its followers in the Star Wars universe bear close resemblance to Eastern religions like Hinduism (which includes a belief in a unifying, impersonal, Brahman energy). Therefore, in this sermon series we need to clarify from the outset the true nature of the "force" in the universe. There is a force that surrounds us and binds our galaxy together but it's a little different from the force portrayed in Star Wars in the following three ways.
1) All living things did not create the “force," rather the true force created all living things.
2) The "force" that surrounds us and binds the galaxy together is not a mystical impersonal energy field; rather He is a personal, all-powerful God.
