Series: Now What
Chuck Booher
Romans 7:14-25
David Smith and I talking when I was really in a Leadership struggle…
Pray
Do you know what is like when you have a deep sense of Shame!
I wanted to do the right thing and I kept doing the wrong thing.
I wanted to make good decisions then I acted against them.
Some of you can relate to this…
You lay in bed in night plagued by what you said…wondering why you said what you said.
For the Mom who says I am not going to loose my temper again and your 3 year old spills their drink
You're a High School student who says no more smoking pot
You are a Guy who says I am not going to miss any of my kids games and we are 2 months in and you have not made a game because you are a workaholic
You are a dating couple and we are not going to be sexually active
Shame Cycle…
Shame tells you that you are bad…yet it is more intense than that.
There is a difference between Guilt and Shame
Guilt says I made a mistake
Shame says I mistake
Shame creates a feeling of disgust…we are disgusted with ourselves.
Shame is an emotional weapon evil uses against us, to corrupt our relationship with God and each other.
Berne Brown quote…
Life is about daring greatly, about being in the arena. When you walk up to that arena and you put your hand on the door, and you think, "I'm going in and I'm going to try this," shame is the gremlin who says, "Uh, uh. You're not good enough. You never finished that MBA. Your wife left you. I know your dad really wasn't in Luxembourg, he was in Sing Sing. I know those things that happened to you growing up. I know you don't think that you're pretty, smart, talented or powerful enough. I know your dad never paid attention, even when you made CFO." Shame is that thing.
The Shame cycle…
Paul even struggled with this…
Romans 7:15
15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.
