Most of us are sticklers when it comes to our name…when you meet people you give them your name. When people meet me and ask my name invariably someone is going to ask, 'do you go by Bob, Rob, Robbie' and my response is always the same - Robert. I don't like the others and will not respond to the others. It annoys me when people try to use my shortened form - I honestly cannot stand it.
- Our name is not just a designation by which we are called so someone can get our attention - it is part of who we are - our identity is wrapped up and inextricably linked to our name.
- Roger's adopted son not responding to old name - I am Jonathon
More than having my name mispronounced I don't want it misused. I don't want it to be damaged or slandered. I don't want it to be the object of libel. I don't want my name associated with things that misrepresent who I am.
- Like the old saying - 'When it really comes down to it all I really have is my name.'
- Think about it - we have - laws that are in place to protect our name/reputation
- Proverbs 22.1 - Good name is more valuable than great riches
Names are important to us today. They were even more important during the days in which the Bible was written. Names were not only important to people but to God.
As a matter of fact, in giving us His blueprint for our lives God tells us how not to use His name.
- Exodus 20.7 - ''You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
- God will not allow His name and character to be defamed or misused. There is a punishment for those who do. I am not exactly sure what that is or how it plays out but the fact there is a punishment attached to this command communicates to us the seriousness of it.
- God's name - given as a gift - given so we might know Him.
