There is an old hymn of the church that says, without God, I can do nothing, without Him I would fail! Without Him, my life would be rugged, like a ship without a sail.

Without a doubt, He is my savior; yes my strength, along life's waves. Yes, in deep waters, my God, He is my anchor, Lord, and through faith, He will keep me always.

To the saved, whether they are called in ministry or just committed as believers to faithfulness, that song is the gospel truth. God to us is everything; God to us is the center and circumference of who we are.
Christ is our enabler, Christ through the Holy Ghost is our equipper, God is our equalizer, God is our helper, and Christ is our intercessor.

The Apostle Paul writes this letter to the church at Philippi under some difficult circumstances. He is not on some spiritual retreat and reflecting on the beauty of his surrounding. He is not on a sabbatical or leave from ministry and journaling about his growth, his maturity, or his goals for the next level.

He is not at some conference where he is being poured into from other colleagues and Apostles to assist him in understanding the times and culture of the church that he is trying to serve. He is not somewhere for a planned time or relaxation, renewal, and reflection.

He is locked up in prison; he is doing 2 to 4 years (the closing statements in Acts 28:30 affirms that he is under house arrest). He is in chains, he is confined, he is imprisoned, and he is being watched each day by guards.

He writes this letter (plus three others, Ephesians, Colossians, and a personal letter to Philemon) with two focuses. First, he wanted to thank them as a church for the offering they sent to him:
Verses 15-18 now ye Philippians know also that at the beginning of the gospel when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
For even in Thessalonica, ye sent once and again unto my necess ...
