Philippians 1:3-11
Our minds, or at least mine, is like a television that never shuts off. There are always images, memories and sound-bites running through it. Granted, it may be due to all the open real estate that exist there but I think we have all had those experiences where we are doing something, working on something, watching something, reading something or talking with someone and all of the sudden a random and completely unrelated thought comes to mind - thoughts that have absolutely nothing to do with what is going on at the present moment.
- It may be a memory - face of a person - name - place or event (past or present) that comes to mind.
- When they do come an emotion attached to them rushes to the surface.
- It may trigger a sense joy - fear - sadness -love - excitement - laughter - anger or stress.
- Emotions have a way of attaching themselves to various thoughts and memories.
Whenever Paul thought about the church in Philippi it brought to the surface a sense of thanksgiving and joy. When the faces of the people in that faith family flashed into mind it brought to the surface a surge of positive feelings.
That's why he says… I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all - (Philippians 1.3-4)
It makes me wonder what type of feeling my face, name or that of this church brings to the surface when other people hear it or think about it. I am not naïve or arrogant enough to think it always brings a flood of positive emotions and groundswell of thanksgiving. Not every place or person I think about brings 'good vibrations' to the strings of my heart.
So, what was it about this church - this somewhat poor and socially eclectic church (made up of people from different backgrounds, cultures, races and generations) that caused Paul to thank God for them every time he thought about them? (To m ...
