Philippians 2:3-11
As you find your place I want to tell you about a man who had been invited to a banquet and was given the honor of sitting at the head table. But he was rather nervous because he was a shy person and a very poor conversationalist and this banquet was going to be filled with prominent and important people.
He shared his fear and concern with a friend and asked how he could carry on a good conversation. His friend said, ''Just ask the right questions. That helps get the conversation going and the other person will think you are a fine conversationalist.''
The fellow said, ''What kind of questions?'' He said, ''Well begin by asking, 'are you married? ''' And they will begin to talk all about themselves. And then ask them if they have any children. Then ask them if they have any grandchildren. That conversation should last a long time.
So this man went to this banquet and surely enough he was seated beside the most important, influential and sophisticated lady in in the city. After the food was served he decided he would start the conversation. So he said, ''Do you have any children?'' She said, ''Yes, I have five.'' He said, ''Tell me about them.'' And so she did. He then asked if she had any grandchildren, and the woman began to tell about her grandchildren. Well, finally he said, ''Have you ever been married?'' As you can imagine, that was the end of that conversation.
In any story and conversation it is important to get and give the full story but it is also important get and give the story in the right order.
The same is true of Jesus' story.
- So often we start the story of Jesus with the manger, the Christmas story, but that is not the beginning of His story.
- His story began long before the opening words of the Gospels were written.
- His story begins with the first words of the Bible, ''In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth ...
