James 1:1-16
Last week I introduced us to a new study in the book of James, a little book with a big message. It is my prayer that as we study God's word that He will not allow us to remain comfortable in our faith. It will challenge us to look in our hearts and determine if this faith that we profess to hold so dear is real, living and vibrant.
James 1.1-16
By way of reminder and brief introduction for those who may be just joining us, James is writing to a group of people who are struggling in their personal lives and in their church.
- Going through difficult times. This new upstart religion - this off-shoot of Judaism was not the most popular movement of their day - not of ours either - it had received a lot of backlash from the Jewish community and from the Greek/Roman community as well.
- Facing temptations to sin - walk away.
- Catering to the rich, looking down on and withholding from the poor.
- Competing for offices and titles within the church - power struggle
- Creating divisions in the church
- Failure to live out their faith - demonstrate that true faith works.
- Characterized by worldliness
- Disobedient - for some a direct illness was the result.
- Problem controlling their tongue
To make things simple they were not much different from your average church and believer today which is why James' words are so critical for us today.
Warren Wiersbe said that all of these problems had one common cause - spiritual immaturity. Spiritual maturity is one of the greatest needs in the church today. Churches are filled with people who are professional and longtime church members and attendees who are not yet spiritually mature.
