In life there will be times of struggle and trial that cause us to lose our head, cool and tempt us to lose our faith.
- James tells us times like these are inevitable. We cannot avoid them.
- Because we are believers does not mean that we are magically insulated from them.
- In truth, if you are trying to live out your faith, it seems to invite them.
- They come in such a wide variety and seem to pressure us in every conceivable area of life.
When times of testing and great trial come God does not simply want us to grin and bear it or passively endure it. He calls us to count it all - all - joy.
- Calls us to make a conscious decision as to whether or not we will count this difficulty/challenge as an asset (something with the potential to benefit and grow me is some way) or count it as a liability (something that will ultimately harm us and cause us loss rather than gain).
- Wants us to understand that tests are for the purpose of maturing us in our faith and conform us to His son.
- Ultimate goal for a trial is not to destroy our faith but to build our faith.
- Ultimate goal for a trial is not to cause us to lose our faith but use our faith.
- Ultimate goal for a trial is to refine - purify - and strengthen our faith
All of that sounds good - wonderful - and spiritual.
- I recognize it is somewhat easy to say standing here at the moment. I know that what I am telling you is absolutely true. There is no question in my mind.
- I believe what I am telling you but I also know it is much easier to say this and hold to this position when you are on the outside of someone else's trial looking in at others.
