A Demonstration of True Religion (6 of 14)
Series: James

James 2:1-13
In the book of Judges, chapter 12, we read about a war taking place between the Gileadites and the Ephraimites. When the Ephraimites were captured they would pretend to be a Gileadite. That made capturing them and securing their borders difficult. The Gileadites came up with a plan to detect who was real and who was fake - who was a genuine Gileadite and who was an impostor. They had a password, Shibboleth. The Ephraimites could not say the word correctly. Instead of shibboleth it would come out as sibboleth. It was an ingenious way to spot a fake and distinguish it from the genuine - determine who is real and who is not.
In James, he is driving hard to demonstrate what true religion/faith looks like. Somehow the church had lost sight of that.
Faith and religion - true and undefiled religion - is more than knowing the right religious jargon - expectations and routines.
- True faith is not simply about what we know but what we show. It is more than keeping it together for an hour long ritual on Sunday Morning.
James lays down a 'shibboleth' and what we find is some of us have a spiritual speech impediment. He reveals that some of us are forgetful hearers rather than effectual doers.
He closes out chapter 1 showing us what faith in action looks like and that thought pattern continued throughout chapter 2. As we begin I want us to go back and pick up with verse 26 of chapter 1 and read through verse 13 of chapter 2.
