That idea of real/genuine is very prominent today. We put 'real' or 'genuine' in front of anything today in our advertisements in hopes that it will sell. We want the real thing - Genuine 14k gold - real coffee - 100% real beef - genuine calf-skin leather and we want it cheap.

We use those words 'real' and 'genuine' in an attempt to say that this is it - this is the best - this is the right one - this is not an imposter - it is not an imitation.

James throughout this letter takes up that same thought. He is determined to show what is real and genuine in the area of faith. Not talking about one faith system/beliefs next to another - is talking about whose faith within our community of faith is real/genuine - who in this gathering of professing believers is the real deal. Who is it in our company that is a phony and who really has faith - true - genuine saving faith?

While this is the underlying current for the whole letter it is the specific focus of this passage.
- This passage is not only the most significant and theologically important passage in this book it is also the most controversial and misunderstood passage in the book - possibly the whole NT.
