James 3:1-12
It has been estimated, by whom and how I am not sure, we speak enough words in a day to put together a 55 page book and over the course of a year we speak enough words to put together 60 300 page books. I don't know if they would be worth reading - that is a lot of words.
That means that our tongues are extremely busy parts of our body. Some estimates say we spend 1/5 of our lives talking.
How we talk and what we talk about reveals a lot about our hearts - about our faith.
I went to a Dr. a couple of weeks ago - when you go to a doctor I don't care what you go for - going to look in your mouth and check out your tongue and throat - stick a thermometer under your tongue - which is much better than the alternatives - and by doing that they will gauge the temperature for your whole body.
James has been trying to help us gauge our spiritual health and temperature.
- Like a Dr. James says open up and let me look in your mouth and at your tongue so I can determine whether your faith is real - fake - phony - or - genuine.
- Let me check your tongue so I can gauge the spiritual temperature of your heart.
James mentions the tongue in every section of this short letter.
- James 1.26 - If anyone thinks himself to be religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless.
- James 2.12 - Speak as one who is judged by the law of liberty/royal law of love.
- James 4.11 - Do not slander one another
- James 5.12 - To let our word be true - let your yes be yes and your no be no.
Here in James 3 we find James' most extensive teaching and warning concerning the tongue. AS we read I want us to learn some important spiritual truths about our speech.
SCRIPTURE
Our tongue is such a small thing and speech flows from it so easily and naturally we may not stop and give it the thought and consideration it deserves.
