Wisdom for Life (9 of 14)
Series: James
Robert Dawson
James 3:3-4:3
One of the words that came out of WWII was snafu, which is an acronym for 'situation normal, all fouled up.' According to the Chicago Times Tribune, the Pentagon has now scrapped that word for a new one, fubb - 'fouled up beyond belief.'
There are a lot of things today that are 'fouled up beyond belief' like - Dawgs and Gators season, Fantasy Football season (Goat Herders 0-5), Government, Economy, International scene, Families and morality in general. There is much about this life that is 'fouled up beyond belief.'
Unfortunately there is much about our churches and their mission and vision that are 'fouled up' as well as the individual lives of the believers that comprise them.
James is writing to a group of believers - to a church - who was less than ideal. As he delivers his message to them - and to us - there is no mincing of words and no misunderstanding as to James's intended meaning. He is very upfront and poignant in what he says. He was not out to win a popularity contest. He was not concerned about what people may say or think about him. He was concerned about how they lived their lives, how they acted and portrayed Christ.
He was concerned that they demonstrate genuine, true, living and active faith.
Today we are going to see two ways of living - two guiding principles for life - two forms of wisdom contrasted. We are going to be forced to ask ourselves what form of wisdom and what guiding principles we truly live by.
SCRIPTURE (James 3.13-4.3)
As we begin looking at these verses we are going to start with the last verses we read and then go back to the beginning and work our way down. Don't believe we will be doing any harm to the text or message by doing that.
Remember: James is dealing with a very troubled church - one that was 'fouled up beyond belief' - a church not so dissimilar to countless churches that dot the religious landscape of our day.
