James 4:1-10
One of the things we have tried to stress to JM is the importance of picking friends wisely. We want him to be discriminate and discerning in choosing those he will have a relationship with. This is one of the things I pray for often in our family devotions for JM and JG. I ask God to give them wisdom to choose friends and that God would provide friends for them who would encourage them and challenge them in their faith and not discourage them.
Our friendships are powerful. Our friends have great influence. Our friendships can honor or dishonor God.
- There are some relationships that we as believers cannot enter into.
Today James warns us about a friendship we simply cannot afford because the closer we draw to this friend the further away from God we find ourselves.
- It is a friendship many of us have - one we hold dear - cultivate and enjoy to the detriment of our faith and relationship with God.
James does what any good parent or mentor would do as he watches those he loves destroy their lives and turn their backs on the most important relationship they could have. He confronts them - he gets in our face and reminds us where our true loyalties should rest and encourages us to forsake the one and embrace the other.
SCRIPTURE
As we look at these verses we to discover what God has for us I want us to organize our message around just a few statements - statements that if we take to heart and remember them will help us cultivate and strengthen our relationship with God.
As we think about our relationship it is important that we remember:
OUR RELATIONSHIP TO GOD IS EXCLUSIVE
Throughout this letter John refers to his readers as brothers - a Christian term of endearment - a family term - a term of affection.
BUT, as he considers their lives - their affections - their relationship to God another term comes to mind - not a term of endearment ...
