No one likes to have things they hold dear and claim to value challenged. It does not matter whether it is our love for our favorite team, dedication to our job, devotion to our family, our taste in music or fashion or even our political and philosophical ideologies. Above all else we don't like our religious views, faith, service to God or the genuineness of our salvation called into question.

That is exactly what James does. He has a strong propensity for making me uncomfortable.
- He is always probing about trying to find a spiritual pulse because he knows a faith that does not work - a faith that is not active -a faith that does not bear fruit is really not saving faith - it is nothing more than an empty profession.
- Saving faith, not earned by works, but faith not accompanied by - faith that does not produce good works is dead.

Genuine faith -faith that leads to ultimate and final salvation - faith that perseveres and proves to be real in the end is seen:
- How we handle trials.
- Humble obedience to God's Word. Our putting away all filthiness and wickedness.
- Attitude toward believers - do not show favoritism based on outward appearance - display the royal law - love others as ourselves
- Control over our anger - poisonous tongue
- Actively submit to God rather than befriending the world.

It is with little wonder that in trying to probe for a spiritual pulse James puts us to one of the most sensitive issues in our lives - an issue on which pastors do not like to dwell - the believer's attitude toward money. James does not try, as most pastors do, to be diplomatic, humorous and non-confrontational. James is brutally and even painfully direct.
