Have you ever felt out of place, like you did not belong? We have all felt that way. We have found ourselves in a situation that made us very, very uncomfortable. You felt like a little boy in a room full of little girls. Now, a teenage boy may appreciate that but not a little guy. It makes him a little uncomfortable. Maybe you find yourself with a group of people you believe to be much more successful, educated or higher up the social ladder than you are and find yourself a little intimidated or self-conscious.

I remember going to one of the baby showers for John Mark when we were in NC. It wasn't that I volunteered to go or wanted to go but I had to go. It was a little disconcerting. I had to ooh and ah over little outfits, pacifiers and diapers while smiling as if I really belonged there and wanted to be there.

Peter, in his brief letter, writes to a group of people who, for much more serious reasons, felt very much out of place and even out of touch with their surroundings. He writes to Christians who found themselves living in a culture that was becoming increasingly less tolerant and more hostile toward them because of their Christian faith.

As we read the opening verses to this letter, one we are going to spend the next several weeks exploring, we find that he refers to them in a way that highlights their disenfranchised position in this world. Let's read together:
1 Peter 1.1-2 - Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.
