One of the things that amazes me about children is their optimism. Eyes filled with wonder - Hearts are filled with hope - Minds are flooded with dreams. It does not matter how unrealistic and improbable they might be. Convinced they can grow up to be Superman or Spiderman and don't try to reason with them or tell them otherwise. But as they get a little older they are not all that excited about being bitten by radioactive spiders and soon realize they did not come from another planet, though their parents may question it from time to time.

Age causes some hopes and dreams to fade but new dreams quickly take their place. They dream of becoming a professional athlete or musician. They fall in love with football and they want to march up and down the field terrorizing the opposing team with their speed, agility and size. They dream about it in class. They watch games. They get out in their yard and play with their buddies while pretending to be their favorite player. They hold onto these hopes of becoming a 6'6'' 240lb bruiser until they wake up in their mid to late teens and realize that their 6'6'' and 240lbs is more like 5'8'' and 165 soaking wet. They want to sing and make music for living. They ask for a karaoke machine for Christmas. They start piano and voice lessons only to find out they are tone deaf and have not sense of rhythm.

Time has a way of destroying many of our hopes and crushing many of our dreams. We have all experienced that in our lives on multiple levels. Financial and retirement dreams we had are swallowed up by financial recession, inflation or endless medical procedures that siphon off all our savings. Wanted a wonderful marriage and family but your spouse changed plans and left you reeling. Wanted to move to a new city and start a good life but the job was not upwardly mobile.
