Who am I? That is a question we continually face throughout our lives. We all remember those painful adolescent teenage years as we struggled and fought to figure out who we were, to establish our own identity, be our own person apart from mom and dad.

Unfortunately that is not a question or a struggle we left behind when we magically became an adult. It is a question we carry into our adulthood and for some throughout their adulthood. Life, in one sense, is a very long personal investigation into who we are.

That is why we hear or read about people, even in what we consider middle-age, facing an identity crisis. There is usually a crisis of some kind that launches us into self-identity issues where we struggle because we are not exactly sure how to define ourselves anymore. We try to identify ourselves by…Identifying closely with another person. We try to imitate someone or several ''someones.'' We attach our identity with that of another person. Identify with a job or task. We identify ourselves by what we do or what we are good at. Identify with our stuff. It could be a house, car, boat or anything else we own or possess.

It is important to know who we are because that determines everything else about us. It is also important to note that our identity will only be as strong or as fragile as to what we attach it to. At first glance we wince at the thought that anyone would attach their identity to another person, job/task or what we possess or own. I am not sure that is so wrong or to off base from what the Bible itself teaches.

The issue is not so much that we attach or intertwine our identity with that of another person, job or even the accumulation of stuff. The issue is what person, what job and what stuff we are attaching our identity to and deriving our identity from.
