Mrs. Foster, a first grade teacher, had endured a frustrating day with one of her boys. ''You've been doing irritating things all day today. These things are some of my pet peeves,'' she said sternly. ''Do you know what a pet peeve is?'' The young boy shook his head no. ''A pet peeve is the thing that irritates a person the most. Do you know what my pet peeve is?'' She asked. The boy paused. ''Ummmm …… Mr. Foster?''

Today I want us to consider how we can avoid becoming the one person that irritates our wives the most. Peter, in chapter 3 verse 7, is going to tell us how we can become a heavenly husband.

I remember one time when I first preached on the husband's role in marriage I asked my wife what it would take for her to have a husband like that, a heavenly husband - she said a new one.

Not that you need a reminder but I am going to give you one anyway.

- We have been looking at how we can live out our faith in difficult relationships.
- Though it may not be the first relationship to pop into our minds marriage can be a difficult relationship, especially for those people who find themselves living in a spiritual mismatch.
- We have already seen Peter's words to wives and now we are given the opportunity to consider Peter's words to husbands.

Ladies, don't be disheartened that his directions for husbands is only one verse long because that one verse is full of meaning and application. For a few minutes I want us to look at a husband's role in:

- Leading his wife.
- Living with his wife
- And if the situation spoken of here is that of a believing husband and unbelieving wife - how to lead her to Christ. (Much rarer than - unbelieving husband and believing wife).

As we look at what some call the household codes we should keep in mind, from an interpretative standpoint, that the theme which began in 1 Peter 2 is still the predominant them in this passag ...
