As most of you know, I love baseball. I have loved it since I was a young child. Just because you love a sport does not mean you are necessarily good at it. I was not a great hitter but I rarely struck out. I put the ball in play most at bats. The problem occurred when I put the ball in play and was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a single. Despite the fact I could put the ball in play against most of the other kids in the league there was one pitcher, Ronnie, I could not hit to save my life. To be honest, I was struck out before I ever stepped into the batter's box.

There are always opponents that seem to have a person or team defeated before the contest ever begins. The reason is not always in the superior athleticism and ability of the other team or player but our attitude and outlook.

Attitude and outlook are important. Warren Wiersbe said, ''Our attitude is our weapon. Our attack can easily determine our outcome.'' While that may sound like a great slogan for a coach to include in a pregame pep talk it is also true in life, even in our spiritual life.

As believers, when it comes to life and all it contains, its joys and fears, its moments of satisfaction and suffering, our outlook and our attitude will determine how we respond, whether we live right, honor God and have a positive witness for the Gospel.

In this letter, one very much about how to live in the face of suffering and persecution, Peter wants us to develop and maintain the right outlook and healthy attitude, both of which are to be Christ-centered.

To help frame the right outlook and shape our attitude Peter points us to some important truths that will serve as a weapon with which we can face life's many battles and struggles.
