1 Peter 5:5-7
Chan Gailey, who has coached football at the collegiate and professional level for many years, tells this story, one that serves as a lesson in humility.
Back when he was the head coach of Troy State University, over in Alabama, they were playing for a National Championship. He was headed to the field for one of the team’s final practices before the big game that week when his secretary called him back to take a phone call.
Gailey, not wanting to be bothered or distracted, told her to take a message. She said, ‘‘It’s Sport’s Illustrated.’’ He quickly turned around and said, ‘‘I’ll be right there!’’ As he made his way back into the building, his mind raced with excitement as he thought about the upcoming article, he was certain they wanted to write about him and the school.
The closer he got to his office the more excited he became. A featured SI article would be great publicity for a small school like Troy State and himself. Theirs was a great story. It would be hard to capture in a simple three-page article. By the time he got to his phone, he was imagining that he might be on the cover. His head was spinning with possibilities.
When he picked up the phone the person asked, ‘‘Is this Chan Gailey?’’ He confidently responded, ‘‘Yes. It is.’’ The person on the other end of the line said, ‘‘This is SI...and we are calling to let you know that your subscription is about to run out and wanted to know if you were interested in renewing for the next year.’’
Coach Gailey concludes the story by saying, ‘‘You are either humble or you will be humbled.’’ (preachingtoday.com)
