John 3:16-21
If you have your Bible, please turn to John chapter 3. John chapter 3 is one of the greatest chapters in all of the Bible. It's Jesus in His discussion with Nicodemus, who was a Pharisee, who was the teacher of Israel, a ruler of the Jews.
John chapter 3, beginning in verse 16, the most famous verse in all of the New Testament for sure. ''For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought (or accomplished) in God.''
Years ago I heard a true story, a war story. Back in the days of World War II there was an American aircraft carrier out in the Atlantic, and they were in danger from enemy submarines. The aircraft carrier sent out five planes to go on a spy mission to see if the planes could spot anything in the water. It was dark. It was nighttime. While the planes were gone, the captain got very, very worried that the ship was going to be attacked, and so he gave the command. He told the ship, ''I want every light on this ship put out.'' He said, ''It's total blackout.'' And the ship, the crewmen, they obeyed, and they shut off every light on the ship.
