These verses have to do with Saul and I'm not reading these verses to discuss whether or not
Saul was a saved person, but I'm going to use this as we study the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of
a believer. Whether he was or was not a believer is not the purpose of my message.
A number of years ago I got in my car, turned on the radio and on the radio there was a singer
singing words like this:
What a difference you've made in my life.
What a difference you've made in my life.
You're my sunshine day and night.
O, what a difference you've made in my life.
I turned off the radio and lifted my heart toward the Lord and said, "Holy Spirit, what a
difference you've made in my life."
I want to talk with you about the difference the Holy Spirit makes in the life of a person when
He comes into that heart and life. In thinking about the work of the Holy Spirit in relation to the life of
the believer there is a three-fold work. There is the work the Holy Spirit of God does FOR us which is
salvation. He births us into the family of God. We are baptized by the Spirit into the body. We are
indwelt by the Holy Spirit. We have the seal, the anointing of the Holy Spirit. There is the work he
does FOR us - the work of salvation.
Then there is the work that He does THROUGH us. That's the work of service. Whether it
be witnessing, singing, serving in a Sunday School class, whether it be teaching the Word of God or
whatever we do in terms of Christian service there is the work the Holy Spirit of God through us and
that is service.
There is also the work the Holy Spirit does IN us and that is the work of sanctification. When
