Funeral for a Wood Worker
Jeff Strite
I Corinthians 3:11-15
Synopsis: Bob was a master at working with wood and had given every one in his family gifts of tables and rocking chairs and walking sticks and more. But Bob was also a Christian and this sermon reflects on Bob's faith in the Master Builder and the salvation that that Master builder - Jesus - gave to his life.
''… no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.'' I Corinthians 3:11-15
This morning I want to tell you a little story about Bob that I think sums up everything that I want to talk about this morning. Several years ago Cindy, his daughter-in-law, found a chair she liked. The only problem was - it was kinda broken. In fact her husband thought it would be better used as kindling for a fire… it was seriously bad shape.
But Cindy said Bob could fix it.
So they took it to Bob… and she was right.
Bob took what you and I would see as a piece of furniture - damaged beyond repair and he repaired it, because saw something in that chair you and I would not.
(Hold that in your mind for a moment)
Bob was a man who loved just about everything in life.
He never complained.
Even when he had cancer.
Even when he ended up in a Nursing Home.
Why?
Because Bob saw life - and everything in his life - as a gift to be treasured.
Bob saw something in life… that many people would not.
Bob treasured working with wood
He made an armoire for Fred and Cindy that was so perfectly made that Fred didn't think it would fit… but it did. ...
