Reconciled (2 of 15)
Series: Colossians
Zach Terry
Colossians 1:19-23
CONTEXT: Last week we saw that Paul began revealing to us the PERSON of Christ, in this weeks passage he focuses on the WORK of Christ. Specifically, he focuses on how Christ PHYSICALLY accomplished a SPIRITUAL reconciliation. NOTE that phrase - He physically accomplished a spiritual reconciliation.
If we are not careful we can fall into the same error as the Gnostics Paul is attacking in this letter. That is - we can divorce SPIRITUALITY from REALITY. But, Paul reminds us that Reconciliation is a tangible reality.
ILLUSTRATION: Have you ever heard someone say, ''I'm spiritual, I'm just not religious''? As far as I can tell that means - I feel good things toward some sort of a God person. In other words, I like certain aspects of the idea of God, and I do whatever I want. I'm spiritual, not religious.
Reconciliation isn't like that - it's incarnational. Do you know what that word means? If you order chili con-carne you are ordering chili with meat in it. Incarnation - means Jesus put on flesh… NOW LISTEN: Faith in the Incarnate Jesus produces and Incarnate faith. In other words - your christianity has meat in it. It's tangible, real. Let's dive in…
TEXT: Colossians 1:19-23 (ESV)
19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
