OPENING ILLUSTRATION: When I was a kid learning to mow - I remember that I would from time to time miss some of the edges of the yard. Dad would come examine my work and he would say, ''Son you need to re lick your calf''. Have you heard that before? Well today I'm going to RELick my calf with this text - we skimmed over it last week as it illustrated the points we were trying to make, but this week we are going to slow down and see it carefully.

CONTEXT: Remember last week we saw the hinge text where Paul moves from Doctrine to the Implications and Applications of that doctrine - Colossians 2:6-7 (ESV)
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

In the verses that follow Paul introduces three common traps the enemy sets to SIDETRACK our spiritual progress. Keep in mind - the enemy can't steal your salvation but he can get you sidetracked.

The word ''sidetracked'' comes from the world of trains and locomotives. To be sidetracked is to switch from a main railway to a side rail. Typically, the trains engine is stopped and all forward progress and momentum is lost.

EXAMPLES: We all know what it's like to get sidetracked in normal life…
- How many times have you got on the internet to research one thing and ended up somewhere completely different, wondering what you originally were pursuing?
- How many times have you entered a room for a singular purpose and one glance at the television causes you to forget what you were originally looking for?
- How many times have you gone to a store to purchase one thing and ended up leaving with everything except what you originally set out to buy?

We are easily diverted from our purposes. It does not take much for us to lose our way. In our text Paul introduces us to SPIRITUAL SIDE RAILS.
